This morning I was talking with an insightful writer (Andrea Johnson of Ideas to Words) about the blog I was scheduled to write this afternoon and  the fact that I wasn’t sure what to write about.  I had just given her  examples of what happens when I get clear on what I want – how it starts to suddenly show up. Being a writer, she thought these personal stories would be of interest and would make good blog material.  So here goes…

Clarity

Clarity

Every day I teach my clients that’s it’s important to get clear and focus the power of their conscious mind on what they want and get their subconscious mind in alignment by letting go of conflicting beliefs.  Sounds simple doesn’t it?

The thing I learned for myself is that I have to pay close attention to see when the thing I asked for actually does show up.  Usually it doesn’t show up in the first five minutes and sometimes my attention span is so short I forget I ever asked.  I know, for me, as soon as I’ve decided what I want, then I want it immediately.  I get impatient when it doesn’t show up in the first day, or first week or first month. Often I forget that I even asked. That’s why I keep a “Demonstration Log” of the good things that DO show up and I ask my clients to do the same.  It’s easier to make the connections this way.

My first example has to do with a book I read a few months ago.  In The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell talks about three types of people; Connectors, Mavens and Salesmen.  At the time, I didn’t think much about it, but a little later I realized that I had a client who was a Connector (this is someone who knows LOTS of people and loves to make connections and share information).  I also realized that I got more referrals from this one client than almost all of my other clients put together.  Right then and there I decided I wanted more Connectors in my professional life and I started telling others about this desire.  There wasn’t much I could DO about it, other than be aware.

listening for Blog 3Using my “Demonstration Log” I realized that within 2 weeks I had met another great connector who has since introduced me into circles that are making a huge impact on my business.  Getting clear on what you want is an AMAZING thing.  Get clear and then pay attention so you see and hear the opportunity when it shows up.

It’s so fun when you decide you want something and then it shows up.  Use of my very own My Day Starter System has been instrumental in consistently changing my ”thinking” and suddenly things are showing up so much more quickly.

Anyway, my second recent example of this has to do with collaboration.  Coaching can be a lonely business.  I work with people all the time, but I have little interaction with peers or “teammates”.  Most of my interaction is one-way, supporting my clients.

After five years in the coaching business, I’d come to realize that I miss the teamwork of my corporate job and that I’d like to have partners or collaborators in my business.  I wanted others to brainstorm with, others who were invested in the same projects I was invested in, others to do workshops with and whatever else we could come up with together.  As I imagined the relationships, they would be fun and provide accountability, and sharing of successes.

Within a week two spectacular opportunities presented themselves that I would not have dreamed of myself.  One is to use my Day Starter System as a workbook in the therapeutic community and offer Continuing Education Credits  and the other is to work with two women to take over a well-established networking group for Small Business Owners.

Focus the lens of your conscious mind on what you DO want, notice when it shows up AND take action on the opportunities presented.  Check out my Day Starter System for a daily template that can help with this.  So often we have the lens focused on what we don’t want.

Once you’ve been shown opportunities it’s important to evaluate whether they are an excellent fit, or merely a fit. Wait for the excellent opportunities.  They will come, with focus.

One Response to “Getting What You Want”

  • Judy,

I really liked this article! I agree that what you focus on will come to you, even if it doesn’t come right away. It’s like I need to be aware of it for it to actualize itself. On a spiritual level, I pray expectantly for things to happen and it’s amazing to see how God answers my prayers. He may not answer them in the way I want them answered but I know He’s listening… and answering my prayers. :-)
